Why is NASA looking at nuclear powered rockets for use with human Mars missions? Nuclear powered rockets can mean shorter travel times, less risk for astronauts and mission, and less supplies. In 2023, NASA looked at two types of nuclear powered rockets. One uses nuclear power to generate propulsion more like a traditional rocket. The other generates propulsion via electric energy, a more modern technique. How do they work and how would they get us to Mars?
